SUPERIOR SWITCHEL WINS FIRST GOOD FOOD AWARD
Only Switchel in Category Wins Prestigious Honor in 2018
Minneapolis, Minn. January 14, 2019 —
Superior Switchel is the winner of the Good Food Foundation’s first award honoring switchel. In addition to being a top scorer at a blind tasting in September Superior Switchel’s Honey Cinnamon Kick Switchel met all of the Good Food Award’s responsible production criteria. Superior Switchel was bestowed the formal honor as part of the 2019 Good Food Awards ceremony on Friday, January 11, 2019, in San Francisco.
Hosted at the War Memorial’s Herbst Theatre in San Francisco, the Good Food Awards bring together 900 of the nation’s leading food producers, chefs, journalists, grocers, and activists to recognize the 200 Good Food Award winners of 2018. These American food and drink crafters demonstrate a commitment to creating delicious, authentic and responsible products. According to the Good Food Awards, the 2018 winners are not only commended for their creativity but also for their sustainable production methods, which showcase the highest social and environmental standards. These producers protect the land, continue to push the bounds of their craft, and respect their peers, all the while redefining the breadth of the American table. With over 2,000 entries each year, the competition is fierce for a Good Food Award. In each category, three food crafters from each region (North, South, East, West, and Central) receive the honor each year.
Superior Switchel’s sparkling Honey Cinnamon Kick Switchel won the Elixir category, which included juices, shrubs, sodas, syrups, and bitters. Hand-crafted, this non-alcoholic, nutrient-dense elixir from the late 17th century, is made with four ingredients: water, ginger, apple-cider-vinegar and honey (or maple syrup). This colonial drink was historically used to replace electrolytes, and offer digestive, immunity and anti-inflammatory support. Although seemingly cousins, switchel is not a fermented tea like kombucha and therefore does not contain any traces of alcohol or caffeine. Superior Switchel is popular not only as a flavorful thirst quencher but as a delightful addition to cocktails and mocktails.
“I am incredibly honored to be named a Winner of the Good Food Award. As a company, we strive to give consumers a better adventure through a better beverage, and I think a Good Food Award helps to exemplify that,” says Melina Lamer, owner, and founder. Officially designated as a 1% for the Planet company as well as a Certified B-Corp, Superior Switchel joins other nonprofits in nourishing people and the planet. “Our commitment to the environment and planet-friendly causes are at the core of everything we do, so being named a Good Food Award Winner not only helps bring awareness to Superior Switchel, but also to the causes we hold near and dear,” said Lamer.

About Superior Switchel
Owner and founder Melina Lamer, a former college hockey player, discovered switchel as a means to replenish and rehydrate after a night on the ice. After graduating college, she was persuaded to sell her switchel at a local Minnesota farmers market. When she couldn’t keep up with the demand, she decided to turn her passion for sustainable food and waterway conservation into a business. Superior Switchel can be found in natural retailers across the Upper Midwest, Pacific Northwest, and the Southeast, as well as at superiorswitchel.com/shop/.
